The Roman Republic was founded by two young brothers, Romulus and Remus, who when infants, were rescued, nursed and kept a live by the legendary She-Wolf named Lupa. The Capitoline Wolf is a fifth century Etruscan sculpture located in Rome, Italy. The term, Etruscan, refers to the culture and way of life of people of ancient Italy. Although the sculpture is Etruscan, it associates with Roman art. The hollow-cast bronze statue stands thirty-three and a half inches tall and is the symbol of the city of Rome, representing strength, might, prosperity, and glory of the new Roman people.
According to the founding myth, Rhea Silvia, a beautiful Vestal and daughter of Numitor king of Alba Longa, had an intimate physical affair with the god Mars and gave birth to the twin sons, Romulus and Remus. The "Vestals" were virgins who dedicated their lives to keep the sacred fire of Vesta burning for 24 hours a day, everyday. "Vesta" was a diety, the Roman goddess of the hearth.
