The Prohibition Era There was once a time in America that the very image of a working man was one who worked all day, then drank all night. By the 1820’s, the average alcohol consumption in the United States was up to 7 gallons of pure alcohol per person. This is the equivalent of about 70 gallons of beer, 39 gallons of wine, or about 15½ gallons of distilled liquor a year. Doctors began to get worried about some peoples’ health under this amount of drinking. They urged temperance, or the reduction of drinking. Prohibition, also known as the 18th amendment, was a time of bootleggers, illegal drinking, and over half a million accounts of law breaking. There were many reasons for Prohibition. Some were smart, and others were not. The most popular reasons were created by the ASL, or the Anti-Saloon League, which set out to destroy the saloon as they knew it. Founded in 1895, they viewed the saloon as the pit of all evil on this earth.
