If I cannot inspire love I will cause fear (148). The quote defines the soul of the book, it defines the creature, and his desperation to be needed and loved. However in James Whale’s 1931 film, The Original Horror Show! Frankenstein, an adaptation of the book, the soul seems to be missing, if not in the very least misunderstood. While Mary Shelley’s novel attempts to sympathize with its creature, its film counterpart holds the creature in high esteem as the scary monster unwilling to adjust to the world around him. Compared to the creature in the film, where he is seen as the mindless monster, Mary Shelley’s creature from many perspectives represent the tragic hero who demonstrates deep emotions, craves for a correlation, and is akin to his estranged ‘father’. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein familiarizes itself as a gothic novel, where the detachment and inhumanity is witnessed in its people, not the creature.
