role of the house in Beloved Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Since man first walked the Earth thousands of years ago he has needed three essential things in order to survive, food, water, and shelter. Shelter has taken many forms during the time from a cave to a house. Man has been living in houses for thousands of years now and they have become a very important part of a person’s life. So important one of the main reasons people work is to pay of their mortgage. In Toni Morrison’s Beloved, most of the action in the story takes place inside and around a house or in the past. The house in Beloved stands for the resentment the community feels towards Sethe and her family, the hatred Beloved feels towards Sethe’s decision to kill her, and how slavery haunts Sethe even when she believes she has found a safe haven. Morrison is able to convey these ideas to the reader through her use of literary techniques, one of which is personification. “124 was spiteful. Full of baby’s venom.” ( 3) This image ......
