Controversies and Themes of The Golden Compass Philip Pullman’s series His Dark Materials has sparked controversy regarding many different aspects. While Pullman was studying English at Oxford University, he came up with the idea for the trilogy from his interest in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. The trilogy includes many different themes such as that of Adam and Eve and the idea of organized religion. One of these controversies is that of castration. In the novel The Golden Compass this idea of daemons is introduced to the reader in a way that does not imply danger or harm. The daemon is simply there to symbolize the characters’ personality, but the Church feels that this external personality will give the children insight into performing sins. When Lyra discovers what purpose of the Oblation Board she is curious as to why the Church would want to destroy the relationship between child and daemon: Why do they do these things to children, Pan?
