"We have only one story. All novels, all poetry, are built on the never-ending contest in ourselves of good and evil.” Though John Steinbeck wrote this in 1943, his words encapsulate the primal struggle between good and evil in the world, and within a man himself, since the beginning of recorded time. Six hundred years earlier, William Shakespeare’s tragedy “Macbeth” explored the powers of good and evil in not only the Scottish sovereignty, but the forces of good and evil manifested in the hearts of his characters. The play revolves around Macbeth, a respected but ambitious nobleman who encounters three witches who divulge to him a prophecy alleging he will become king of Scotland. The prophecy feeds Macbeth’s lust for power, and spurred on by his scheming wife, Lady Macbeth, he propels himself into a murderous mission to gain control. After claiming the throne, Macbeth spirals into a state of paranoia, killing off all those who present a threat to him or his crown. In this play of darkness and retribution, Shakespeare toys with the ideas of the nature of good and evil. ......
