How does Seamus Heaney reveal his culture in Digging and Follower? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Heaney perpetuates his culture in both ‘Digging’ and ‘Follower’ in many ways. He successfully reveals his Irish culture to the reader and the stereotypical views on Irish people. He bases his poems on generations and uses a range of poetic techniques in order to portray this central theme. There are similarities in his style but he uses different techniques in both poems. Both poems share the same themes of ‘generation’ and culture’ but the title of each poem indicates different meaning and gives a different image to the reader. The title ‘Digging’ is an active verb and summarises the poem content of physically digging the ‘gravely ground’, but also has a deeper meaning that could be digging into his past or simply to uncover something. The title ‘Follower’ is also an active verb and we are immediately given indication of culture in the poem. Heaney uses many poetic techniques throughout the poem in order to lie emphasize on his ideas and to convey them more clearly to the reader, chiefly those which relate to his culture.
