Wuthering Heights - Critical Evaluation Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The story of Catherine (Cathy) Earnshaw and Heathcliff is one of the most infamously romantic and well-known in English literature. When Mr Earnshaw brings the dark-skinned foundling Heathcliff to his home, Wuthering Heights, he receives mixed welcomes. Heathcliff strikes up an unbreakable bond between himself and Cathy, but runs away when he overhears her saying it would degrade her to marry him. He returns, some years later and with a fortune, after Cathy has married a young, gentle man, the exact opposite of Heathcliff, who is still in love with Cathy. His tirade is only ended by his final reunion with his love, Cathy - his death. In this essay I will explore further the ideas which Emily Brontë uses to challenge the social expectations and pretences of her time, the mid-nineteenth century, by discussing her use of characterisation and setting and the close relationship between them.
