Out of the 450 IVF clinics in the USA there is an estimated 400 000 left over embryos and only 2.8% of theses are being designated for stem cell research. That leaves approximately 389 000 embryos that have been frozen and stored for any where up to 10 years and they could have been used to help others, through embryonic stem cell research. An amazing 10% of the left over embryos have been abandoned and some fertility doctors have reported storing them for over 10 years. These figures are from a study in 2003 in the USA and Australias left over embryo count would be quite different but research has shown the percentages are dauntingly close.
