Sociological thought attempts to explain issues in terms of interaction between social institutions. Emile Durkheim developed the theory of anomie and used it to explain crime and in particular suicide. In Social Structure and Anomie (1938) Robert King Merton elaborated Durkheims theory to explain how Americas cultural goals and the socially constructed means for attaining them can place pressure on certain groups within society, resulting in a higher chance of deviance in those groups.
