Since the Second World War social liberalism has been the dominant theory of citizenship in western liberal democracies. This theory shows that equal and full citizenship for all adults born within the domain of the state already exists. However, social liberalism does not easily adapt to the idea that women still have a secondary status in social life. Women hold few top positions in politics, the economy, the military, the judiciary and the media. ¡°Women generally play a smaller part than man as workers or producers in economic life, they have lower incomes, participate less in political parties and unions, and seen in general to be less respected in public life than men.
