African Americans Breaking Down Racial Barriers Through Athletics Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In March 27, 2008, Fox News reports that the City of Eugene has hired a group called “Blacks on Track” to teach Olympic Trial volunteers, police, and hospitality workers how to “talk to the visiting African Americans”. Fox News states that Eugene is currently about 2% African American and that this group will help the Olympic Trial workers “direct African Americans to local churches, barber shops, and soul food restaurants”. It amazes me that this is still taking place in America. This is 2008! The fight for equality has been going on for over 150 years. The ruling of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas in 1954 paved the way for the modern day movement. Sports have played a major role in the awareness of African Americans right to equality (Fox News, You Tube). There were many milestones in the modern Civil Rights Movement. On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, NAACP member Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat at the front of the “colored section” of a bus to a white passenger, defying a southern custom of the time (Brunner & Haney, p 3).
