Grey Owl Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Have you ever heard about an Englishman Archie Belaney? Probably not because, although he is a famous or infamous man depending on how you look at it, he is known as Grey Owl. Grey Owl was born in September 1888 in Hastings, England, to a farmer family. He had an unhappy childhood and created a fantasy world to escape it. Grey Owl was abandoned by his parents and was raised by two strict aunts who were determined not to allow Grey Owl to grow up and be worthless like his father. To pass the time Frey Owl would retreat to books and an imaginary world filled with romantic images of North American Indians. When he departed to Canada in 1906 he married an Ojibwa named Angele and began picking up the language and the culture into his personal narrative. At that time he dyed his hair black, darkened his skin with henna and stared in a mirror for hours to practice an Indian expression. He left Angele and showed his new image to a young Iroquois girl named Gertrude Bernard.
