Great Migration Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Great Migration of the 1630s took place because of problems between King Charles I and Parliament. Parliament at the time was made up mostly of Puritans. This is the reason over twenty thousand puritans migrated to the New World between 1630 and 1643. The reason for the problems between Charles I [and the puritans in] Parliament went as far back as Queen Elizabeth's death, in 1603.
Queen Elizabeth without children, which meant there were no heirs. The next inline was Mary Stuart, the Catholic Queen of Scotland. Because of Mary's death, her son James became King James I. After taking his place as King of England, he started the "Divine Right of Kings", which stated he was "above the law and answerable only to God".
One of his first goals as king was to make the Church of England the church of all his people. He said that all subjects must attend Church of England services, pay any taxes asked, and accept the church's belief without question. Those who did not follow these guidelines were subject to whatever punishment he wants of them.
