Witches in Macbeth Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, the three witches are vital to the downfall of the overconfident Macbeth. They are the only mythological characters in the play; they use spells, prophecies, and charms to influence many aspects. The three witches foreshadow the play’s action by delivering mysterious prophecies and warning the audience of the paradoxical nature of the play; they equivocate to purposely destroy Macbeth, who is misled by their pronouncements. The audience is introduced to the three witches immediately at the start of the play. Although Shakespeare does not describe their characteristics, it quickly becomes evident that the witches serve as an instrument of mystery, fantasy, and evil. They contrast all the other characters who speak in blank verse; the witches deliver their lines often in song or rhyme. The first line of the play in Act 1, Scene 1, line 1 states “When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain?” The witches open the play with rhyming couplets during a dark storm.
