In her autobiography First They Killed My Father, Loung Ung shares her gripping story of change, hardship and survival when the Khmer Rouge stormed into Phnom Penh, Cambodia on April 17th, 1975. From this moment the five-year olds life is changed drastically with more hardships in five years than most people will see in a life-time. Due to Pol PotÂ’s extreme regime, over one third of the population died of starvation or torture; many people could not survive. In the autobiography Ung describes all the strategies people used in order to stay alive. These strategies may suggest that survival not only brings out the heroic qualities such as determination and endurance, but also the darkness within us. For many people, it may be human nature in order to survive to commit heroic acts; to go to great lengths to keep themselves alive when exceedingly determined, which can consequently mean using the darkness within; and an individual may not think they have a heroic nature or darkness within oneself until they are put into a traumatic situation.
