Gender is a learned social construct concerned with not what one is but what one does. It is determined by the acceptance of normative conceptions of attitudes and activities appropriate for the performance of ones sex category. The formation and learning of gender begins in the home, and continues at school, the workplace and within the social network. Due to these influences, we develop gendered ideas concerned with masculinity or femininity. Becoming a regular boy suggests masculine traits including strength, aggression and independence. On the other hand, growing up to be a regular girl suggests feminine traits including sensitivity, graciousness, and care. This is basically completely opposite to that of a male. In this essay, I will discuss the two main problem forms of masculinity and femininity in society; cars and fashion, and the effects this has on the young population.
