EMO and the Eighties Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Emo which has widely been mistaken for groups of depressed and malevolent teenagers is much more than it seems. Is it a style of music that inspires depressed youth across the nation to put on thick heavy make-up and think about everything that has ever went wrong in life? Does it even exist? Many say it is short for emotional, but it’s been defined as emotionally expressive punk rock music. However unstable the definition, it is clear to its fans that the style exists, but it’s a little confusing as to who fits into the category. The word ‘EMO’ has a history to it, categories of music, and a fashion sense that is to this day uncategorized. As for the historical background, Emo is said to have started in Washington, D.C., after the band, Minor Threat, broke up in 1983. This was around the time that "D.C. hardcore punk" ended. It was after the band broke up that the punk bands all over the country started searching for new styles, including ‘cheeze-metal,’ mosh and alternative.
