No cell lives in isolation. An elaborate cell-to-cell communications network coordinates the growth, differentiation, and metabolism of the multitude of cells in the diverse tissues and organs that make up a fruit fly, a frog or a human being.
Within small groups of cells, communication is often by direct cell-cell contacts, gap junctions permit adjacent cells to exchange small molecules and coordinate metabolic responses. Adhesive junctions between the plasma membranes of adjacent cells determine the shape and rigidity of many tissues.
But cells also to communicate over distances longer than those facilitated by extracellular products act as signal: a substance released by the signaling cell is recognized by the target cell, in which it induces appropriate response.
Thus, cells use an enormous variety of chemicals and signaling mechanisms to communicate with each other. Among these signaling molecules, we can talk about hormones.
