From the very beginning of Othello, Iago demonstrates one of the main themes of the play jealousy. In his first soliloquy he complains bitterly about missing a promotion which goes instead to Cassio. Iago is jealous not only of Cassios promotion but also because Cassio is intelligent, a great arithmetician and has a beautiful wife, a fellow almost damned in a fair wife. Iago also states that the only battle experience Cassio has is from books,
That never set a squadron in the field/ Nor the devision of a battle knows (1,1,22-23)
and hates Othello for promoting Cassio before himself. In comparison to the normal, good-natured, down-to-earth Cassio, Iago is portrayed as a vengeful, evil man who thrives on pulling others down. Iago admits freely to serving no one but himself in his service of Othello.
