Introduction
The Internet is
a worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). (Wikipedia, 2008) This "network of networks" consists of millions of smaller networks that provide information exchange through e-mail, file transfers, and interconnected web pages. This interconnection exposes a business to the outside world and increases the opportunity for security breaches.
Early networked computer systems relied on a closed environment for its security. As the interconnection of systems and the demand for more functionality increased, the protection provided by a physical environment was decreased. Networks that were connected to the Internet became increasingly vulnerable to malicious attacks. Without sufficient protection from destructive malware, Internet-connected computers could be exposed to unnoticed viruses, spyware, and other software that has caused widespread damage.
