Critical Lens: “Courage is the thing. All goes if courage goes.” - J.M. Barrie, 1860-1937 J.M. Barrie once said, “Courage is the thing. All goes if courage goes.” To me courage is having the ability to do something that frightens one. I believe that what J.M. Barrie is trying to say is that, if you have the courage inside of you to do something, you will most likely succeed. Having that extra boost will help you in the long run to accomplish your goal. I have to agree with her because I have found myself in that position before. If I don’t have the courage to do something, I won’t be able to go through with it. Two works of literature that come to mind when thinking of courage are The Great Gatsby and The Catcher in the Rye. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the protagonist of the story Jay Gatsby is infatuated with his dream of ending up with Daisy. Through out the novel, one of the major themes was the past.
