A key debate in the civil rights movement is the importance of Martin Luther King. Clayborne Carson contends, if King had never lived, the black struggle would have followed a course of development similar to the one it did. T the figure most closely associated with advances made by the civil rights movement in the years 1955-65, King was an inspiration to many blacks and his moderateness was inoffensive to whites, resulting in a wealth of support. His mannerisms along with impressive oratory skills contributed to his success as a civil rights leader.
