A key debate in the civil rights movement is the importance of Martin Luther King. Clayborne Carson contends, “if King had never lived, the black struggle would have followed a course of development similar to the one it did.” T the figure most closely associated with advances made by the civil rights movement in the years 1955-65, King was an inspiration to many blacks and his moderateness was inoffensive to whites, resulting in a wealth of support. His mannerisms along with impressive oratory skills contributed to his success as a civil rights leader. We must consider how significant the change in black civil rights would have been without King, was it he who made it possible? The Alabama bus boycott reached a successful conclusion on the 13th November 1956 when segregation laws were declared unconstitutional. The charismatic King had acquired status of a national celebrity, and this is probably the main reason he was wanted as leader of the bus boycott (this he accepted reluctantly) already initiated by the local black community.
