McCarthy Era in The Crucible Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

As I began reading The Crucible, I felt prepared for what to expect and how to interpret it. I thought the play was simply a direct parallel between the Salem Witch Trials and the McCarthy Era. However, I quickly found myself questioning and reanalyzing what I had previously perceived to be apparent was not all it seemed. Seeing the film “Good Night and Good Luck” definitely made that parallel even harder to accept. Salem was a small town, without a constitution, that was faced with accusations of illegal actions by its people in which, to my knowledge, all the accused were not guilty. The McCarthy era refers to an entire nation, faced with paranoia that caused the legal actions and thoughts of its citizens to be accused and punished. In the case of the McCarthy era, although most everyone accused was found guilty, the actions for which they were found guilty of were not illegal therefore had no real basis.
