Coincidence? I Think Not Sometimes when we encounter everyday coincidences we disregard and label them as of trivial importance. Like real life, the coincidences presented in Tale of Two Cities might seem quotidian, but they have a greater meaning than their actual face value. A number of events are foretold through the symbolic knitting of Madame Defarge, the echoing footsteps of a past that will not be forgotten, and the imagery of wine stained streets soon to be smeared with blood. The aforementioned events are pulled together in this story of love and sacrifice. Through the use of imagery and symbolism, Dickens implements these mere “coincidences” to foreshadow events in his novel. Collectively, they are an example of successful use of foreshadowing to create an atmosphere of foreboding and intrigue.
