Often times, socially accepted norms and stereotypes can contribute to the demise of those who dont exactly fit the mold. The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is an example of one such occurrence. The narrator of the story, whose life is closely tied to that of Gilmans own, has been diagnosed with temporary nervous depression by both her brother and her husband. (Gilman 33) In following the practices of late 1880s neurologist S. Weir Mitchell, the young writer, wife and mother was prescribed phosphates, tonics, isolation, complete physical rest, and complete submission to the authority of her caretakers in order to remedy her ailments. During the era in which The Yellow Wallpaper was written such practices were considered beneficial. The narrators husband, a physician, adheres to this belief and forces his wife into a treatment of solitude. Rather than heal the narrator of her psychological disorder, the treatment only contributes to its effects, driving her into a severe depression.
