As I got off from my bicycle, I could see dozens of cars trying to find parking spaces in front of the Central Market. Most of these cars were double-parked, with anxious owners inside looking furtively about for signs of the policeman who might come and book them. The car park was filled to capacity and it must be hell waiting for someone to leave so that one could park ones car. I was glad that I did not have a car. A bicycle was much easier to park. So leaving my bicycle safely locked, I stepped into the huge market building.
This was the first time I went by myself to help my mother to buy some vegetables and so on. The first thing that struck me about the market was the din. It was a continuous droning of voices engaged in the business of buying and selling. Now and then, this monotony was broken by the screech of the coconut grinding machine and the dull thump of crates being unloaded from lorries. Right next to the entrance to the building were the vegetable stalls. They were arranged in two lines facing one another with a narrow passage-way in between them. ......
