Human Motivation Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Motivation has been described as the “set of psychological processes that cause the initiation, direction, intensity, and persistence of behaviour” (Klein 1989, p150). McShane and Travaglione (2005) describe motivation as a person’s drive and the way it affects their voluntary behaviour. Taking these two descriptions of motivation into account it can be concluded that motivation is a person’s drive to satisfy a need, which is unique to that individual, and this ‘drive’ is affected by both internal and external factors. Ramlall (2004, p53) states that a need is “an internal state that makes a certain outcome appear attractive” and draws the inference that individuals are in a state of “tension” (Robbins 1993) when their needs are not being satisfied. In order to satisfy their needs and reduce tension, a person exerts effort in the hope to obtain satisfaction of their need and decrease tension. Theorists agree that people have needs and that it is the dissatisfaction of their needs that drives motivation however, they debate over where this drive comes from and what need ......
