Starting with the invention of the shopping cart by Sylvan Goldman in 1936, to self-service gas station, ATMs, and self-check out procedures at grocery stores, retailers have been trying to find ways to shift some of the workload to the customers and machines. Each day it seems that customers are doing more and more on their own and that more and more work seems to be done by machines rather than people. Do customers wish to move at their own pace? Do they not want to interact with sales clerks and checkers? These are the questions retailers are struggling to answer. Is the move to more automation and the pushing of more work on the customer fair to all customers? For instance, is it fair to a senior citizen who is either fearful of the new technology or unable to perform some of the work functions retailers are transferring to them?
