Passed On by Carole Satymutri Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The poem “Passed On” gives a general idea of a girl whose mother has passed away, and before her death she has prepared several index cards with instructions and information written regarding to everyday things the child might need assistance in. The poem is a generally slow and melancholic poem. It focuses in great detail on the effort and determination the mother works with in order to prepare these index cards for her lovely child. The mother has little time left and all her efforts are inserted into the well being of her child. The basic impression suggested is of a child who is in grief over the death of her mother however from another angle it can be seen that the mother is in some instances quite controlling over her child. Perhaps this child wanted a bit more freedom and experience for herself. This idea will be further developed in the commentary. The opening stanza of the poem shifts from the death of the mother to the way she spent her last few months. The poem opens up on a strong note describing how the mother though dead is stored in a box. The box could mean vario......
