Rocking Horse Winner Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The passage for consideration is taken from D.H. Lawrence’s short story, The Rocking Horse Winner. This story is about a young boy who grows up feeling the need to satisfy his mother with money in order to obtain her love. Paul, the young boy, turns to horse gambling and searches for his luck on his rocking horse. There are different dramatic elements found in the passage and the story. The four dramatic elements to be examined are: conflict, atmosphere, pathos, and suspense. D. H. Lawrence incorporates the use of conflict throughout the passage to achieve a dramatic purpose. Paul, the young boy, is trying to obtain luck which causes him to have an inner conflict within himself. Paul’s mother believes that in order for one to have money, one must be lucky. Paul robustly searches for a way to be lucky to satisfy his mother’s needs and win her love and acceptance. Paul finds luck riding on his rocking horse in a bizarre manner. His sisters stare at him awkwardly and begin to fear him. “…his eyes had a strange glare in them. The little girls dared not speak to him.” (Page 78) ......
