A Feminist Perspective of “I’m “wife”- I’ve finished that” In I’m “wife”- I’ve finished that, Emily Dickinson writes of a woman’s journey from girlhood to womanhood. The poem appears to be told in an almost sarcastic tone. It seems to reflect Dickinson’s anger at the expectation for women to marry. This would make sense, considering the fact that Dickinson herself was never married. She undoubtedly was scrutinized for her decision to remain unwed. It was highly unusual for a woman to remain single in the nineteenth century. The poem reveals Emily Dickinson’s frustration towards a society places value on women based solely on their marital status. Dickinson points out that a girl was not considered a woman until she could call herself a wife.
