“The transformation process illuminates the fact that texts are shaped by the context they are composed and read in” Clueless, Amy Heckerling’s cinematic C2oth reconstruction of Jane Austen’s early C19th Regency era novel, Emma illuminates the fact that texts are shaped by the contexts in which they are composed and read in. This is illustrated through Heckerling’s transformation of the traditional, rustic values and attitudes of the Regency era into dynamics and forms of contemporary existence. Satire is used throughout both texts to highlight the faults within the society they are depicting to highlight and reveal the inadequacies of the current society. Unlike Austen who was limited by only having the written word in which to communicate, Heckerling uses the various features of C20th multi-modal entertainment, to remold the socially rigid society, the pretentious perceptions on marriage and primarily the moral transformation of the central protagonist. Both texts essentially present the story of an ‘impotent and out of control’ heroine who undergoes moral reform. ......
