OSullivan expresses how the nation understood and applied the idea of the Manifest Destiny, suggesting that the United States was designated to obtain all the lands from Atlantic coast to the Pacific Ocean. The desire for new lands did not only derive from economic visionaries, but from free slaves and groups looking for prosperity and religious freedom. However, an important factor delayed the immediate quest for new lands: the Native Americans were already established in territories and tribes along the well dreamed western lands. Therefore, the U.S. government created policies concerning Native American tribes in the West from 1868 through 1890. These policies changed and evolved during this period and as a result, by the end of the 19th century, the Native American population was reduced to less than 250,000 people. (Huag 2)
