Too Proud to Love, Too Proud to Live Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Chinua Achebe is credited for writing some of the most well known modern African novels; one in particular is Things Fall Apart. There is much debate among literary critics whether the protagonist Okonkwo, fits Aristotle’s classic definition of a tragic hero. According to Aristotle’s definition, a tragic hero must be “higher than ordinary moral worth”, be responsible for their own fate, and be “neither completely good nor completely evil”. The protagonist must have a tragic flaw or “hamartia” and be “connected to parts of the cause and effect chain of actions producing pity and fear in the audience” due to a change of fortune. Although Okonkwo holds many aspects of a tragic hero, such as his stature and actions, his fortune is never changed by a flaw or weakness that he possesses; and his “hubris” is too great to produce pity. Aristotle defines heroic stature as being “born into nobility” being “good or fine”, “true to life and yet more beautiful”, and maintain a “consistency”. “Born into nobility” means containing aspects such as wealth, power......
