Chinua Achebe is credited for writing some of the most well known modern African novels; one in particular is Things Fall Apart. There is much debate among literary critics whether the protagonist Okonkwo, fits Aristotles classic definition of a tragic hero. According to Aristotles definition, a tragic hero must be higher than ordinary moral worth, be responsible for their own fate, and be neither completely good nor completely evil. The protagonist must have a tragic flaw or hamartia and be connected to parts of the cause and effect chain of actions producing pity and fear in the audience due to a change of fortune. Although Okonkwo holds many aspects of a tragic hero, such as his stature and actions, his fortune is never changed by a flaw or weakness that he possesses; and his hubris is too great to produce pity.
