Birth of a Nation Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Birth of a Nation The movie I watched was called Birth of a Nation. It was directed (and partially written) by D.W. Griffith, who was never actually a part of the clan himself. Released in 1915, under the name The Clansman, which changed soon after, the major stars in the Birth of a Nation were Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, and Henry B. Walthall. In Birth of a Nation, the KKK is looked upon as the good guys, while the blacks are looked upon as bad. The movie is essentially divided into two different parts: Part 1 – Civil War & Part 2 – Reconstruction. Part one opens in a time before the Civil War with two families: the Stonemans, a Northern family led by an abolitionist Austin Stoneman who has a daughter and two sons; and the Southern Camerons who have two daughters, and three sons. The Stoneman boys are friends with the Camerons and come to visit (when slavery still exists). There, one of the Stoneman boys falls in love with Margaret Cameron, and Ben Cameron is given a picture of Elsie Stoneman, who he falls for as well. The Civil War begins, and the families take sides.
