The Three Contexts of the Expedition
The Endurance expedition, led by Ernest Shackleton, can be analyzed under several different contexts. The context under which Shackleton initially portrayed the polar expedition was as an imperial opportunity. In a time when little was known about several areas of the world, the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) funded expeditions to the African, Asian, Arctic, and Antarctic continents. Other countries, as well, were racing to map new territories and name new geographical features after their monarchs or themselves. Britain was fiercely competitive in this goal and hoped to reach the South Pole first and claim it under the nations flag. In Shackletons 1907 Nimrod expedition, he came within one-hundred miles of the South Pole; the farthest anyone had progressed before turning back. Not long afterwards in 1911, the Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen was the first to reach the South Pole. Shackleton was disappointed in himself and his countrys loss of the race to the South Pole.
