To what extent was the Wannsee Conference of 1942 a turning point in the Nazi Party’s treatment of the Jews? On 20 January 1942, fifteen high-ranking Nazi party leaders met to discuss the ‘Final Solution’ to the ‘Jewish Question’. This historic occasion, later known as the Wannsee Conference, instigated the annihilation of over six million Jews (Matas, 2008). While it did not mark the beginning of Anti-semitism, the Wannsee Conference was nevertheless a significant turning point in the Nazi Party’s treatment of the Jews in Germany. It signaled a dramatic change from previous intentions to deport the Jews to Madagascar to a new final solution of mass murders to establish a pure Aryan race. The Wannsee Conference also marked the first time the processes of extermination were openly articulated and eventually lead to the implementation of the pre-meditated genocide of German Jews. Moreover, it was the events subsequent to the Wannsee Conference that killed two- thirds of Europe’s Jewish population, namely, the tragic legacy that is the Holocaust.
