Life is not simply black and white. This is the main theme conveyed in Gary Ross film of Pleasantville. He uses various film techniques to communicate this message to his audience. These include camera shots/angles, symbolism, dialogue and music. A life that is perfect maybe idealistic to some people, however a utopian society like that in Pleasantville does not exist in the real world. But, what happens if only one thing changes in Pleasantville? Will it corrupt their universe forever? Ross uses a lot of symbolism throughout the film especially Biblical symbolism. The contrast of colour and black and white is the most noticeable aspect of Pleasantville. Symbolism exists in the coloured people versus those that are in black and white. This is reference to the racism that occurred between the white and black people in the 1950s and 1960s; in the United States. A key scene involving David/Bud and Margaret where he grabs an apple from a tree and eats parallels the story of Adam and Eve, symbolising the Fall of Man.
