Creativity is a beautiful thing! I believe that it is the act of using materials to express what you are feeling on the inside to the world. It can be as simple as a stroke of paint on a paper or a scribble. It can be as intricate as Picaso. As long as the person creating the art is able to express them selves, they are being creative. There are three stages of development in using creative materials. In this culture or society the stages of creative development peak between the ages of four and six years old. This correlates with Erik Ericksons stages of Initiative vs. Guilt stages of healthy personality. The stages are characterized by reaching out, exploring and experimenting. (Class room notes 2/12/08) The first stage is the exploration stage. Children explore materials and investigate properties through manipulating the materials they are using. The use of sensory process of mixing, using their senses and exploring the quality and nature of the materials is key. At this stage the children are not interested in having an end product.
