A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce is a rollercoaster ride through the thoughts and feelings of Stephen Dedalus as he grows from a young boy into a man. The book takes us on a trip into Stephen’s head and spirals around the many questions he asks himself about life and all the aspects pertaining to it. From being a loner in his childhood to reaching his final decision, and all the choices he makes in between, The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man shows how early personal stands lead Stephen to an overall position regarding life. The personal stands that Stephen Dedalus create for himself start when he is very young. As a child at Clongowes Wood College, Stephen often “kept on the fringe of his line” (4) therefore making himself a loner. He imagines things such as his “dead mass” (22) if he were to die, and “the bright picture of Marseilles…and of Mercedes” (65) as if he was in The Count of Monte Cristo. The decision he makes to become a loner allows him to start contemplating life and its different aspects at a very young age. The first stand Steph......
