Does the enthalpy of combustion of straight chain alcohols vary with the chain length?
Apparatus:
1. Copper calorimeter and cardboard lid
2. Two ,25 cm³ pipettes
3. Digital thermometer
4. Spirit burner
5. Digital balance
6. Stand and string
7. Distilled water- 200 cm³
8. Methanol- 30 cm³
9. Ethanol- 30 cm³
10. Propanol- 30 cm³
11. Butanol- 30 cm³
Procedure:
1. To determine the specific heat capacity of the calorimeter:
a) Clean, wash and dry the calorimeter. Any water present will affect the calculations.
b) Pipette out 25cm³ of distilled water into the calorimeter and cover it with the lid. Measure the temperature accurately, using the digital thermometer.
c) Heat about 50cm³ of distilled water to approximately 60°c. Pipette out 25cm³ of this water and add it to the calorimeter. Now start noting the temperature.
d) Measure the temperature at regular intervals, while stirring continuously.
1. To determine the enthalpies of combustion of the straight chain alcohols:
a) Pipette put 25cm³ of distilled water into the calorimeter.
