McEwans novel Saturday recounts a day in the life of Henry Perowne, a neurosurgeon. It is 2003 and the world is filled with fear of anxiety post -9/11 attacks on New York City. However, McEwan does not paint an entirely pessimistic picture. Using Theos motto of thinking small, McEwan shows that there can be hope even in the midst of hopelessness, as long as one focuses on the people closest to one.
Saturday is set against the backdrop of world negativity and hopelessness. Henrys day begins with seeing a meteor flying through the sky. At second glance he realizes that it is a plane and immediately jumps to the conclusion: terrorists are responsible, intent on destroying their way of life. It is the paranoia and fear that has gripped the world as a result of the attacks on New York City and it has given rise to Henrys wild unreason and his folly of overintrepretation.
