In the story Through the Tunnel by Doris Lessing, the writer conveys the two main themes of a youth growing up to independence and finding an identity. The theme of growing up to independence is conveyed by Jerrys choice of going to the wild bay instead of the safe beach with his mother. The theme of finding an identity is conveyed by Jerrys quest to find his way through the underwater cave and his attempt to impress the French boys.
