The gospels have sighted many instances wherein Jesus associates himself with the poor & the oppressed. His great compassion and mercy have exhibited when he gave them primary privileges in heaven. The poor & the oppressed that is depicted in the gospels dont necessarily pertain only to the economically poor but also to the social outcasts or the rejected people. These rejected people are those who have unclean / dirty professions such as prostitutes, thieves, robbers, tax collectors, gamblers, usurers, herdsman, etc., those who dont pay tithes to the priests, those people negligent about Sabbath rest & about ritual cleanliness & uneducated/illiterate people because at that juncture, education is a matter of learning/knowing the contents of the law/Torah. Thus, uneducated/ illiterate people are considered lawless/immoral people. The economically poor people refer to the widows who dont have anyone to rely on for the living of the family & orphans who have been abandoned by his/her parents. Both are merely hoping for the donation of the generous people.
