The climate of a particular area has a direct impact on the characteristics of its soil. Climate affects both the production of vegetation and the activity of the organisms around it. For example in a desert region where the vegetation is limited there is less organic material available for the soil. Because of the lack of precipitation in these regions, chemical weathering is inhibited and therefore leads to the course texture and light colour of the soil. The opposite occurs in colder climatic regions, such as a pine forest where the soil is much darker in colour compared to soil found in the desert. The pine needles that drop in these areas decompose, and cause a weak acid that strips the soil of its soluble base; which leaves it acidic.
The soil found in pine forests is azonal, meaning it has well developed characteristics. The climate of the area is responsible for these characteristics, due to things such as erosion and precipitation.
