Ernest Hemingways short story, Hills Like White Elephants has symbolism throughout the setting. The setting of the story represents the decision that needs to be made by the American man and the girl as to whether or not she will go through with the operation. The speakers differ in the fact that he is a man with more carefree viewpoint towards life, while she is a girl who is weighing out her options wanting to find a more meaningful life, demonstrating that making a resolution is not always simple as one might think.
The railroad tracks alone are very symbolic towards the setting of the story due to the fact that one side is fertile and full of life, whereas the other side of the tracks is dry and barren. This represents the choice to be made. One choice is to choose life and have the baby-- this is apparently what the girl truly wants.
