Despite the numerous voices that speak negatively of the Muslim practice of veiling
there is a rich collection of literature that displays it in a positive light, as well as counters the stereotype by which women who wear the veil are often portrayed. Opponents of veiling will usually equate it with male dominance and female oppression. They claim it is something men within the religion/culture force upon their women to hide their sexuality and control their bodies. While this may have some validity in places like Iran where women are required to cover their entire bodies and heads or face punishment, it fails to account for the vast number of Muslim women who not only choose to wear hijab, but enjoy it as well. Veiling came about, as many clothing styles do, as a fashion trend. The wives of the founder of Islam, Muhammad, were the first to wear veils as a way to set them apart from other women.
