Schlieffen Plan Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Explain how the Schlieffen plan was meant to work.
The Schlieffen plan was formed in 1905, to stop the possible threat of an alliance between France and Russia. The plan was created by the chief of German staff, General Count Alfred Von Schlieffen. Schlieffen knew that it would be impossible to defeat both France and Russia on two different fronts at the same time, and with the possibility of Britain joining them in 1907, a circle would formed around Germany, this worried them.
His plan, was to take twenty percent of his army to the border of France and Germany, this would distract France. Schlieffen then wanted the other eighty percent of his army to around, through Belgium and Luxemburg, and hit Paris hard, whilst the French where distracted by the southern army across the border. Germany would then take France out of the war when they took control of Paris. All of this would have to be done by a six hour deadline, whilst the Russians prepared themselves for war.
