Mock Forest of Eden Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Shakespeare’s As You Like It, the Forest of Arden emulates qualities of the Garden of Eden, both before and after the fall of man. While in Arden, characters remediate, - some positively, such as an increase in their well being, and some like the ‘fall’ in Eden, end up unhappy. In Arden, as in Eden, characters who are content to be ignorant are rewarded with happiness, while those who question and strive for knowledge end up unhappy. The likeness of Arden to the innocent state of Eden resonates throughout the play. Before the fall of man, Eden was a paradise, where man had authority of all things, including time, and Arden shares these qualities. Duke Senior speaks of Arden as if it were Eden. “Are not these woods more free from peril than the envious court?” (2.1.3-4.)… “Here feel we not the penalty of Adam, The seasons’ difference…I smile” (2.1.3). By this, Duke Senior is saying that in Arden, neither the seasons’ change nor the cold will bother him, as if nothing could trouble him in Arden.
